It is easy to light and leaves very little ash, and is quiet.I have put a Vulcan fan on top of the blanked top flue plate and point it backwards which increases the room temperature by a full 2 deg C for no extra fuel and keep an open stove top kettle on top for adding humidity as it gets to dry otherwise. Always open this before opening the stove door to prevent smoke getting inside. It burns so well now and is so controllable and uses less than half of the wood it used to, flue temperature has dropped by 100 Dec C whilst stove temp has gone up by 100 Deg C. I extended the handle so it can be controlled from the side of the stove. I also converted the stove to rear flue box with damper. I got a new baffle plate from esse which is now thicker as well as new firebricks, I also found the hinges were different lengths causing the door to not seal properly at the top, Esse sent me new hinges for free 12months outside the warranty!, excellent service. ĭraw was too much up the chimney, this caused it to burn too hot which warped the baffle plate and cracked the vermiculite bricks as well as sucking all the heat up the chimney and the constant noise of air whistling into the stove. So I redid the whole thing myself, properly. The "Little Thurlow" I had in my previous home was much easier to live with. Not because of the warping baffle issue, that was easy enough to rectify, although it shouldn''t have happened but I''d definitely look for something easier to control. Would I buy another? No, I don''t think so. As to its performance since? My only real criticisms are that: 1) The air control is very much on/off and it can be tricky to get the fire burning as you''d like.2) The ash tray is difficult to get out without spilling it everywhere and the grate is awkwardly shaped to shovel out. Esse flatly refused to discuss the issue with me subsequently, despite my attempting to warn them of the problem. My metallurgical knowledge meant I was certain that the problem was highly likely to recur with a new part, but unlikely to do so again with the original so I straightened the component in my workshop and we refitted it. Esse said they would send a replacement on receipt of the original but that it would take several weeks. The most likely explanation is that the stresses imparted in the vent plate, when it was rolled flat, and when it was profiled, would have been relieved the first time the stove was brought up to working temperature with the resultant banana shape we found. Upon dismantling the stove it was blindingly evident that the sliding vent plate had bowed so badly it was incapable of sealing off the air inlet holes. The installer came and tried damping it down himself without success. Esse were also adamant it was user or installer error and would not deal directly with me, only via my installer. Me having many years of experience with log burning stoves, my installer was adamant that it was either "perfectly normal because it was the DEFRA approved model" or user error.
